About

Hi everyone,
Im Nikos Kavoori, the owner of this site, well i guess you can call me that, i want to thank my friend Dillon Hayward for setting this site and helping to pay the hosting fee’s. Also i guess i will thank Tyler Bishop for hosting this site.
Acknowledgments
This site has in no way been a one man project, i would have not been able to do it without the help of others. I would like to give special thanks to the following people.
-To Will Martin who has provided invaluable information and photographs of Athens from the early 90’s, it is astounding how much has changed since!
-To Hugh Cain for providing me with information on the Gainesville Midland as i add pages on that subject. With my very limited knowledge of the railroad i could not write these pages without his help and firsthand insight.
-To Ed Kelly, who has provided me use of his photo collection and Central of Georgia property map for use on this site.
-To Mary McCahon, who has shared her research work on the Georgia Railroad trestles with me and in general been a pleasure to talk to and discuss the Georgia RR Athens Branch.
Introduction
Athens, GA known as the Classic City of the south, home to the University of Georgia, Sanford Stadium, R.E.M and 33,831 generally half conscious college students.
In addition to all this Athens was and still is to some extent a great place for a railroad enthusiast. At one point the city was host to 5 railroads on five separate lines, mergers and abandonment’s have reduced this to two railroads on four lines but it is still an interesting place nonetheless.
This site is intended to provide information for railfans visiting my home town of Athens, GA as well as those interested in the history of its railroads or Georgia railroads in general. Significant progress has been made on the site but there is still lots to do, so stay tuned!
You can find my pictures here, the majority wont be posted on this site unless relavent:

Nikos,
Thoroughly enjoying your pictures!! I am a glass insulator collector from Toccoa, Georgia and am curious if you have ran across any poles or glass in your searches of the Athens RR’s. Also, the abandoned line through Bishop, we had planned on walking portions of it to determine if indeed their ever was a telephone/telegraph line that run through that area. Please let me know, would be very curious to know if you saw any on your searches. Thanks!!

It is wonderful to see the Gainesville films and photos. I was forunate to be with Bob Soule on several runs of the steam from Gainesvile to Athens route. Would be interested in getting in touch with him. I am one of the last remaining Gainesville Midland Steam employees still living, today
